The first week of Wimbledon wraps up on Saturday with a pair of Americans in action, as Ben Shelton takes on Marton Fucsovics and Brandon Nakashima faces Lorenzo Sonego. It’s the finale of the third round.
(10) Ben Shelton vs. (LL) Marton Fucsovics
Ben Shelton has carved out a space for himself in the top 10. He is the second-highest ranked American after Taylor Fritz thanks in part to his success at majors. So far in 2025 Shelton posted career-best results at the Australian Open (semifinals) and the French Open (fourth round). He made it through his first two rounds in routine fashion with straight-set wins over Alex Bolt and Rinky Hijikata.
His third-round opponent is world No. 105 Marton Fucsovics. Despite his ranking, the Hungarian has played well on grass this season. He came up through qualifying in Stuttgart to make the quarterfinals. He has played a lot of tennis already these last two weeks. Fucsovics came up through qualies (almost), and while he lost at the final hurdle to Chris Rodesch, he grabbed a spot as a lucky loser. It’s likely that his Cinderella run will come to an abrupt halt on Saturday. Shelton plays well on the big stages and the American wields one of the most dangerous first serves on tour right now.
