Food insecurity rises in Fort Worth area as need, population grows

Julie Butner is alarmed that food insecurity is rapidly increasing in 13 North Texas counties served by the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Butner, president and CEO of the organization, said a new study about food insecurity is a stark reminder that more than 570,000 people in the Fort Worth area need daily help to be able to feed themselves and their families.

“We are distributing what’s equivalent to 1.25 million meals a week,” she told the Fort Worth Report, adding that the needs keep growing. “We serve a lot of food to a lot of people.”

Data shows that the food insecurity rate in the Fort Worth area increased to 15.2% from 13.9% between 2022 and 2023, according to a Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study released last week.

Overall, the Fort Worth-Dallas area ranks third in the nation for the highest number of people — more than 1.3 million individuals —- experiencing hunger in 25 counties. About 60% of those people live in Tarrant and Dallas counties.

Children and seniors are among the most vulnerable since Texas remains the most food-insecure state in the nation, the study showed. Texas’ food insecurity rate rose to 17.6% — representing 5.4 million people in 2023 — from 16.4% in 2022.
