Confirmed: Paul Wanner will get first start at U-21 Euros against England

The U-21 European Championship has been very promising so far for Germany’s U-21 team. Collecting two wins and full points from two group stage games, they sit on top of Group B, having already secured progression to the knockout rounds. The only thing to play for is group winner. The only competitors for that title, England, are two points behind the Germans with the team’s direct confrontation to come.

And Paul Wanner will surprisingly start in that game. While the Germans have had collective success so far, Wanner has had to accept playing just 4 minutes in total across both matches. With the likes of Nick Woltemade, Nicolò Tresoldi, Paul Nebel and co. starring up front, there has been no room for the Bayern Munich youngster. However, that will change against England, with coach Antonio Di Salvo explaining the sudden change:

“Paul is always on my mind. He’s been doing really well in training,” he said to BILD, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Paul has become more physically stable and has scored a lot of goals in training.”

Despite the caliber of the opponent, this is perhaps the least important match of the tournament, given Germany have already secured their participation in the next round. Kicker captured Di Salvo speaking of resting stars such as Nick Woltemade and Noah Atobolu in this match, given slight fitness concerns.

Still, this is a chance for Wanner to establish himself in the team, to show he can dominate the match and that he still is one of Germany’s greatest young talents.
