Mysuru Dasara: BJP seeks D.K. Shivakumar’s apology for ‘hurting Hindu sentiments’

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashok on Thursday demanded that KPCC chief and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar tender an apology for “hurting sentiments of Hindus” by making a statement that the Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru is “not the property of Hindus alone.”

Speaking at a press conference at the State Secretariat, the BJP leader alleged that the Congress government has been “insulting Hindus” by ordering a SIT probe with regard to the alleged mass burials in Dharmasthala and the statement on the Chamundeshwari temple in Mysuru.

“If Mr. Shivakumar says that Chamundi Hills is not the property of Hindus, then is it the property of the waqf board?” the BJP leader asked.

Noting that the Mysuru Wadiyars have been worshiping Chamundeshwari as their family deity for several centuries, he said Mr. Shivakumar’s statement aimed at “appeasing Muslims.”

The BJP leaders have held that the Karnataka government has hurt sentiments by inviting Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate Dasara festivities.

DKS to keep mum

Meanwhile, after criticism from within the Congress and the Opposition over several issues, including singing the RSS anthem in the Assembly, Mr. Shivakumar has said that he will observe silence and that the party’s spokespersons can be approached for comments on any subject.

A visibly upset Deputy Chief Minister told reporters on Thursday, “You see, people don’t tolerate when I speak about some facts.”

He further said, “Some people’s only job is to find fault in whatever I utter. It is better not to speak. There are other leaders and party spokesmen. You (reporters) better speak to them.”

Reporters had approached Mr. Shivakumar seeking his reaction to BJP national general secretary B.L Santhosh’s post targeting Rahul Gandhi for allegedly “making” Mr. Shivakumar apologise for singing the RSS anthem in the Assembly.
