Schools readying to welcome students after summer vacation

As government schools in Tamil Nadu are slated to reopen on June 2 (Monday) after the summer vacation, schools in Ramanathapuram district are gearing up to invite students in the new academic year.

The teachers and staff of Vallal Pari Municipal Middle School in the town, going ahead of others, decorated the campus with floral designs and banana trees to welcome the students and parents after a long gap.

K. Renganayahi, Headmistress (in-charge), said the school had witnessed 105 new admissions this year owing to such initiatives they had undertaken in the last academic year.

“We are planning to invite Class I new admission students along with their parents with silambam performance by our school students,” she said.

Additionally, the students would be made to write the first letter on rice, a ritualistic practice to mark their beginning of formal education, with the help of their parents, Ms. Renganayahi said.

Seeing such initiatives, she said, the parents would get interested in enrolling their wards in the school.

Also, as students would be found disinterested in attending classes after a long gap, the ice-breaker event on the first day of the reopening would encourage them to start their classes enthusiastically, she said.

“Though such innovations might look unnecessary from an outsider point of view, they have actually increased the number of admissions this year with student strength increasing from 621 to around 730,” she added.

School Education Department officials said they had instructed the schools to encourage the students through such games and welcome events to help them reunite with their friends and teachers after the summer vacation.
