BJP ‘fearful’ of any opinion which it dislikes: Congress on arrest of Ashoka University associate professor
Coming out in support of Ali Khan Mahmudabad, a professor in Ashoka University who was arrested over a post on Facebook, the Congress party on Monday (May 19, 2025) condemned the action, and said it showed “how fearful the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is of any opinion which it dislikes”.
Mr. Mahmudabad, head of the Department of Political Science at the university based in Sonipat, Haryana, was arrested on Sunday (May 18, 2025) after two First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged with stringent charges, including endangering the sovereignty and integrity of the nation, in connection with social media posts related to Operation Sindoor.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said his party condemned any character assassination, vilification, trolling, harassment, and unlawful arrest of any individual and vandalism of any business entity, either by fringe elements or through official state machinery.
