The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put several northern Kerala districts on orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on orange alert while yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall has been issued for Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Alappuzha.

Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on orange alert on Tuesday. Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta have been placed on yellow alert.

The IMD reiterated that a low pressure area is likely to form in the Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around May 22 under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation in the region which could take shape by May 21.

The low pressure area is expected to move northwards and intensify, the IMD said in a special bulletin on Sunday. The weather agency further said conditions are favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over more parts of the south Arabian Sea and the south, central and northeast parts of the Bay of Bengal.
