CM announces 20-day clean-up blitz, promises Delhi’s transformation
The Delhi government will launch a comprehensive 20-day cleanliness drive across the Capital starting Friday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday, asserting that the initiative will be implemented on a “war footing” with full coordination of key departments.
Speaking at a press conference, Ms. Gupta said, for the first time, a “triple-engine government” was working in unison. “We aim to make Delhi a benchmark for cleanliness and beauty. This transformation won’t happen overnight, but strong steps have been initiated. This campaign is about eliminating years of accumulated filth and systemic apathy,” she said.
The Chief Minister emphasised that zonal-level officers — DCs, DMs, and DCPs — had been assigned personal responsibilities to ensure that all roads, footpaths, parks, and public spaces are cleared of debris, dust, and waste.
“Any lapse in cleanliness, safety, or unauthorised encroachment will lead to direct accountability,” she said, adding that street lights and CCTV cameras will also be activated to ensure safety.
Ms. Gupta said the government will enforce a “zero-tolerance policy” on illegal dumping, encroachments, and garbage, warning that strict action will be taken against any officer for negligence.
‘Viksit Delhi’The comprehensive drive will be rolled out in a “systematic and intensive manner”, the Chief Minister said, adding that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Public Works Department have been directed to clean drains and sewers to prevent waterlogging.
Defacement of public walls with posters or banners will be met with legal action and heavy fines. Public toilets, sewers, and drains have been prioritised, and segregated waste collection will be implemented in every street with the involvement of Resident Welfare Associations, Ms. Gupta said.
Noting that this is the beginning of a “historic shift”, the Chief Minister said a clean and beautiful Capital marks the first step towards a “Viksit Delhi”.
