Drunk men thrash policeman and tear uniform at Bhopal railway station; one held, two at large

The Madhya Pradesh Government Railway Police (GRP) are still searching for the two remaining accused, who assaulted a personnel and tore up his uniform at Bhopal’s Rani Kamlapati railway station when he questioned them about drinking in the parking lot, a senior officer said on Monday (April 28, 2025). One accused has already been arrested.

A purported video of the incident has also surfaced on social media showing a group of men pushing, aggressively punching and abusing constable Nazar Daulat Khan. One of the accused is also seen telling another cop, who tries to intervene, that he should step aside because “he was a Hindu”.

Speaking to The Hindu, Superintendent of Police, GRP, Bhopal Rahul Kumar Lodha said that the incident took place at around 2 a.m. on April 27 when a patrolling party spotted three men and a woman drinking inside a car in the parking area of the station.

“When the personnel were persuading them to leave, they started arguing with them and attacked a constable and started beating him up. It took an ugly turn when they tore up his uniform,” he said, adding that one accused, Jitendra Yadav, was arrested immediately.

“While he was taken to the police station, the other men and the woman fled,” he said.

The video also shows Mr. Khan walking away from the scene with his uniform shirt and trousers torn up while a man again charges at him but is stopped by an onlooker. “He is abusing our Hindu brother,” one man is heard yelling while himself abusing Mr. Khan.

Mr. Lodha said that Mr. Khan sustained minor injuries in the incident.

While an FIR was filed April 27 morning under provisions for assault on a public servant and obstructing his from discharging his duty, Mr. Lodha said any charges regarding the communal slurs were yet to be added.

“The incident did not start with a communal angle so that is not our focus. The most important thing is that his uniform was torn up. The incident shows the accused’s psyche,” he said, adding that more relevant charges will be added if they deem fit during the investigation.

While Yadav worked as a driver with a ride-hailing platform, the police have also identified another accused as Dilip Ahirwar, who has two cases of assault against him.

“We are questioning Ahirwar’s family and will catch him and the third man. The woman was not named in the FIR as she was not involved in the physical confrontation,” Mr. Lodha said, adding that no political connection of the accused has appeared so far.

The Opposition Congress, which has already mounted an attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over recent attacks on police personnel, said that it has sent the self-respect of the police “in abyss”.

“Mohan Yadav ji, Ask your home minister and issue a circular, how many times will the police being beaten up in the state be a non-cognizable offence for you?” the Congress said on X, targeting Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also holds the Home portfolio.

It also termed the incident a “reflection” of the government’s “shamelessness and incompetence”.

Earlier in February, a uniform-clad police personnel was also assaulted and briefly held hostage by a group of drunk men when he had stopped their car during night patrolling.
