Hindi as third language no longer ‘mandatory‘ from Class 1 in Maharashtra schools: Education Minister

After the controversy in Maharashtra over Hindi being made compulsory as third language in schools from Class 1, State School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse on Tuesday (April 22, 2025) announced that Hindi will no longer be mandatory from grades 1 to 5. He added that the Centre is not imposing Hindi on the States, only implementing the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Mr. Bhuse informed of issuing a Government Resolution (GR) and remove the word ‘mandatory’. “We will frame new rules after studying the school, the number of students, and teachers teaching there. However, the three-language formula will be implemented, and schools must accommodate other language choices.”
